He co-founded XM Satellite radio, created the FM Rock radio listening format, advised Rolling Stone Magazine as well as major artists like Eric Clapton, Yes and Iron Maiden. Lee gives us an amazing look into how and why he and a small group created Satellite radio, why AM radio was lacking, and how FM radio, which was a dormant medium, blew up the old, tired AM radio playbook and was turned into the massive influence it became. And Lee's take on the future of radio and TV news will blow you away.

Welcome to Season 4 of AdYack.

Today on the podcast, I get to interview Mr. Lee Abrams. To say that Lee Abrams is a radio legend would be an understatement. His career has spanned over five decades and shows no signs of slowing down. Lee is credited with developing the album rock radio format, first introduced in the 70s to help stations move away from playing hit singles to more album-oriented rock. While he remains passionate about his past, he’s focused on reimagining the future. He consulted over 1,000 radio stations, 12 major print publications, and numerous tv stations and cable networks throughout the country. He’s advised bands like Iron Maiden, Yes, The Alan Parsons Project, The Moody Blues, and Bob Seger, among others. Newsweek has listed him as one of their “Top 100 Cultural Elites,” industry publication Radio Ink cited him as one of the 75 most essential radio figures ever.

REWIND:   WHEN FM ROCK OWNED AMERICA

A client dug up this presentation I made at his station in Tampa from 1978.  It’s a very complete overview of our format and the audience in its first generation.  You may find it interesting as a historical piece and a flashback to when FM was America’s soundtrack.  More importantly it can be a primer for anyone, in 2022, creating a fan-generating radio style experience.

Some amusingly disturbed radio from 1990

Z-ROCK presentation tape/air check.   Circa 1990…..The HYPE on my part is waaay over-the-top ——the channel was, well,  insane. I don’t think there was a louder, crazier or more disturbed station… ever. For your way back machine amusement:
